Google search preview and title length checker
See roughly how your title and meta description could look in search results on desktop and mobile, before you publish.
What this tool does
Your title and meta description are often the first thing people see of your page. This tool shows roughly how they could look in Google results on desktop and mobile, and warns you when the words are likely to be cut off. You can type a new version, or load what a live page uses now and edit from there.
Text you type stays in your browser. If you press Load from page, our server fetches that public page once so we can read its tags, and doesn't store it.
Why the tool measures pixels as well as characters
A narrow letter such as "i" takes far less room than a wide one such as "W", so two titles with the same character count can fit differently. Google's documentation says there is no limit on title length, but that titles are truncated as needed, typically to fit the device width. It says the same about meta descriptions.
Google doesn't publish exact cut-off points, so the widths used here are our working estimates and the preview is a guide. As a rule of thumb, aim for about 30 to 60 characters in a title and 120 to 160 in a description.
How to write a title and description that earn the click
- Put the important words first. If the end gets cut off, the reader should still know what the page offers.
- Use the phrase your reader would search for, once and naturally. Repeating it looks like spam and doesn't help the reader.
- Give each page its own title and description. Copies across pages make it harder for searchers and Google to tell them apart.
- Make a specific promise. Say what someone will get from the page, and include a location or price if that helps them choose.
- Match the page. A title that oversells brings in visitors who leave again straight away.
Example
| Version | Title |
|---|---|
| Vague | Home | Welcome to BrightOffice Services Private Limited |
| Better | Office Deep Cleaning in Pune, Same-Week Slots | BrightOffice |
BrightOffice is a made-up business. Both titles are similar in length, but only the second tells a searcher what is offered, where, and why they might choose it.
Good to know
- Google may show different text. It can rewrite titles and build snippets from your page if it thinks that better matches a search, so your tags aren't guaranteed to appear exactly as written.
- A better snippet doesn't guarantee a higher ranking. Its main job is to win more clicks from the positions you already hold.
- The preview is simplified. Real results can include dates, ratings, images and other details. This tool isn't affiliated with Google.
