What this GST calculator does
It works out GST in both directions. Add GST starts with your price before tax and gives you the final amount. Remove GST starts with a tax-inclusive price, such as an MRP or a total on a bill, and shows how much of it is GST. The result also splits the tax into CGST and SGST for a sale within a state, or shows it as IGST for a sale between states.
The formulas
- Adding GST: GST = amount × rate ÷ 100, and total = amount + GST.
- Removing GST: base price = amount × 100 ÷ (100 + rate), and GST = amount - base price.
- Within a state: CGST and SGST are each half of the total GST.
Worked examples
Adding GST: a designer charges ₹10,000 at 18% to a client in the same state. GST is ₹1,800, split into ₹900 CGST and ₹900 SGST. The client pays ₹11,800.
Removing GST: a product is sold for ₹1,180 including 18% GST. The base price is ₹1,180 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹1,000, so the GST is ₹180. A common mistake is to take 18% of ₹1,180, which gives ₹212.40 and overstates the tax.
Which GST rates apply now?
After the 56th GST Council meeting, the main slabs changed from 22 September 2025. The 12% and 28% slabs were replaced by a simpler structure:
| Rate | Typically covers |
|---|---|
| 5% | Merit rate for many everyday goods and some services |
| 18% | Standard rate for most goods and services |
| 40% | Luxury and sin goods |
| Special rates | For example, 3% on gold, with some items exempt |
These are broad groups, and the rate depends on the specific item or service. Look up your HSN or SAC code on official GST sources, or ask your accountant. Older invoices may still show the earlier 12% or 28% rates. You can type any rate into the box to check them.
Why this matters when you set prices
If you sell to consumers, the price they see normally includes GST, so your real revenue is the base price rather than the sticker price. On a ₹1,180 sale at 18%, you keep ₹1,000 before costs. Work out your margins and ad targets from that lower figure. Our ROAS calculator can then show whether your ads make money.
Advertising invoices may also carry GST. Registered businesses can often claim input tax credit on it, depending on their situation.
Important note
This calculator is for quick estimates and doesn't replace professional tax advice. Results are rounded to two decimal places, and invoices can round differently. It doesn't cover compensation cess, composition schemes or reverse charge. Check with a qualified accountant before you file a return or issue an invoice. Your numbers stay in your browser and aren't sent to our server.
